The Caldecott Medal is awarded by the American Library Association. The Caldecott Medal "shall be awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American Picture Book for Children published in the United States during the preceding year. The award shall go to the artist, who must be a citizen or resident of the United States, whether or not he be the author of the text." The Caldecott winners are announced during a press conference held during the ALA Midwinter Meeting each year. The Midwinter meeting typically takes place in mid or late January, and the press conference always falls on the Monday morning of the meeting. --http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/caldecottmedal/aboutcaldecott/aboutcaldecott
