The fine arts historically consist of painting, poetry, sculpture, architecture, and music. The performing arts traditionally include theatre and dance. A key element in any type of art is that the work in question must have been created primarily for aesthetic and intellectual purposes and are judged for their beauty and meaningfulness. Fine arts and performing arts are to be distinguished from popular art, decorative art, applied art (which must serve a function), and entertainment. In the contemporary scene, some other pursuits have been deemed to be "fine art," such as film, photography, video production, design, and conceptual art.
